Discover your own special skills, what sets you apart. Then utilize them to create your unique pitch.
It’s all about the doing of it. The creating. The diving into a challenge and figuring your way out of it. The final outcome is only part of the experience.
For instance, I paint. And I love it. Sometimes paintings paint themselves, they fly out of your brush like that scene in Fantasia…brilliant! But sometimes the muse calls in sick and your stuck with pond scum. It happens. And you’re presented with a challenge, but you tackle the challenge! You use your experience, trust your instincts, add your special sauce and make it your own. The point is, eventually the painting gets done. It wasn’t there before and it wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t gone for it. You took charge and did it your way.
Being a painter is romantic too, and kinda sexy. Maybe it’s the words you toss around, like contrapposto and chiaroscuro. Maybe it’s the whole losing-yourself-in-it thing. Or the paint spattered clothes. Or the smell of linseed oil. Or the wine breaks. It’s different than “normal,” and you get to hear people go “oooohh” a lot. Always nice.
The same holds true in real estate. It’s just another medium, another art form – contraposposto is replaced by “open floor plan,, chiaroscuro is replaced by “water view” – and it’s still romantic, still sexy. Very exciting. And what makes it magic is how you present it, how you build your story.
I’m a big fan of creativity in every form, because everybody has something they’re better at than anybody else. They may not have figured out what it is yet, but it’s there hiding in the shadows waiting to be coaxed out and encouraged. And that’s not always easy. But so worth it, because being creative, in any way, shape or form, is pretty much the cure for everything, as far as I’m concerned. It keeps you engaged, curious, at the top of your game. And it’s always with you.
When you’re preparing for your next showing, think about what sets you apart. Make it an art form. Make it something special!
Talent is useless unless it’s shared. Give generously.
